Creating a New Website for your business startup.
This page is here especially for the participants of the FAS Start Your Own Business Course, who I had the pleasure of meeting last Thursday 16 July 2009.
Key Points
- Know your customer. Who is your browser? Who is your target market.
- Serve your customer. Make it easy for them to find what THEY need.
- Think as a browser – What will attract them, what will bring them back?
- Structure, a clean, simple to navigation site with relevant menu titles, these are important issues when it comes to google and other search engines optomisation.
- Good text, Images & Videos are great. Demonstrate your offering ASAP – (Go on, put yourself on yourtube and link in to it.)
- People now have high expectations when they hit a web site, they will not hang around to read about you. You need to demonstrate that YOU / YOUR SITE is the the site they were looking for.
PLANING AND STRUCTURE
Sketch out your site using simple shapes and lines to draw a map of how your site will work.

Once you have done this, get to work on the content. Keep it simple, concise, and include images.

Make sure your images are good. This will demonstrate your commitment to quality, and show off your product or you at its best (tip – Get a friend with a good camera, plan your shots and what message you want to get accross, dont just smile, think happy thoughts and smile. Use natural light, get outside )
Youtube, there are many tutorials on youtube, so get searching.
Start with a blog. A wordpress blog will really help you cement your thoughts and help you test your content and structure. You can show it some of your peers and see what they think. Take feedback from potential customers. What did they like, did they notice the things you needed them to notice? Did they get your message? Was there a call to action? – Did you ask them to do somthing and did they do it.
Refine your site, then you are ready to take it to a professional designer. Having taken you site to this stage with all your content completed, you are in a much better position to negotiate for the best price.
